hotel adventures in East Phoenix

or, how I found out some places in PHX can make the rough neighborhoods back home look almost hospitable.

seriously. I'm in the process of moving, to put it one way, and have to stay in a hotel for some time. being cost-conscious, as you are charged by the night, made me select one particularly cheap motel, aptly referring to itself as the "Payless Inn". that should've been my first clue, that attending lodging named after a affordable shoe chain meant I was in a world of hurt. but I didn't get it until I actually checked in.

upon checking in, imagine my surprise to discover there were 3 lamps in the room, with only 1 light bulb between them. imagine my surprise to see the dried blood on the door, floor and on the carpets (at least, I hope that was blood). imagine my surprise to discover no TP and no towels in the room.

I spent 5 days in this rat-trap, and walking around the neighborhood I found that the contagion was everywhere, indeed, endemic in the neighborhood itself. going to get a bud light at the gas station, I discovered locks on the cooler doors. I have never seen that, not even in New York. remarking on this to the attendant, he told me that on Halloween, he had to come to work armed with a shotgun. and one occupant of the inn spoke of the McDonalds there, how they had technology to switch the soda machines on and off which was quite funny in a deplorable way. anyway there were enough issues besides these, such as the rampant homeless/drug users milling about, in your face street prostitution (one girl solicited me), and frequent commotions right outside my door, to convince me never to return to this particular place.

I checked out, grabbed my belongings and got on the light rail to Mesa. if I have a kid, I will teach him never stay at a place named "the Payless Inn" or something similar. your experience is guaranteed to be less than delightful. and to think, there were places rated even worse than this in PHX.
